Why America Still Sings: A Few Numbers That Might Surprise You

If you had to guess how many Americans sing in a chorus, what would you say? A million? Five million?

Try 54 million.

That number comes from Chorus America, the national organization that tracks the choral field, and it covers adults and children singing in everything from community choirs to school groups, church choirs, barbershop quartets, and gospel ensembles. Roughly 1 in 6 Americans sings in a choir of some kind today, up from about 1 in 7 a decade ago. There are an estimated 270,000 choruses across the country.

Put another way: more Americans sing in choirs than play baseball, football, or tennis. It is, quietly, one of the largest participatory activities in the country.

Why so many?

The research points to something most singers already know in their bones. People who sing in choirs report feeling more connected, less lonely, and more engaged with their communities. 73% of choral singers say group singing makes them feel less isolated, and choral singers are dramatically more likely than the general public to vote, volunteer, and participate in civic life.

For older adults, the effect is even more striking. 69% of singers ages 65 and up report a "very good" quality of life, compared to just 22% of the general public in the same age range. Singing keeps the mind sharp, the lungs working, and the calendar full of people you genuinely look forward to seeing.

What this means for us

The Novi Choralaires has been a small piece of those national numbers for more than 50 years. Each Tuesday night during our season, 50-plus voices gather to do something humans have been doing together since long before recorded history: making music in a room with other people, in real time, with no auto-tune and no second takes.

It is a stubbornly analog activity in a very digital world. And apparently, 54 million of us still think that's worth doing.

If you've ever thought about giving it a try, our Friendly Voice Placement is a low-pressure way to see if choral singing might fit into your life too. No solo required. No audition pressure. Just a conversation and a chance to sing a few notes.

Welcome to the blog. We're glad you're here.
